Nobel Peace Laureates To Hold Climate Strike at 17th Nobel Peace Summit

(Mérida, Yucatan) —Seventeen Nobel Peace laureates have issued a statement in solidarity with the youth-led Global Climate Strike and call for immediate action at the United Nations emergency climate summit in New York City next week. Speaking in Yucatan, Mexico, the Nobel Peace laureates expressed their ‘unwavering solidarity’with the young leadership of the September 20-27 Global Climate Strike movement. They called on world leaders to prioritize the climate crisis and respond to it with utmost urgency.

“The time for rhetoric and inadequate action has ended. We no longer have the luxury of small steps in the right direction” the laureates noted in their statement.

The Nobel Peace laureates —who include, among others, Rigoberta Manchu Tum, Kailash Satyarthi and Amnesty International— will hold their Mérida Climate Strike! on September 20, 2019, at Monumento a la Patria in Mérida, Yucatan at 8:00, on the sidelines of the 17th Nobel Peace Summit. The summit brings together Nobel Peace Prize laureates and representatives of awarded organizations for annual in-depth, expert conversations on peace.
