It is with great sadness that the Permanent Secretariat of the World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates learnt of the passing of Mr John Hume. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, former colleagues and the people of Northern Ireland.
Mr Hume was joint recipient of the 1998 Nobel Peace Prize with Lord David Trimble, and in the words of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, “Hume is the architect behind the peace process and the solution chosen in the Good Friday Agreement”. His contribution changed Northern Ireland forever, and helped to bring peace to a divided people.
The Permanent Secretariat was honored to host Mr Hume at the 2008 World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates, held in Paris. Fittingly, the Summit’s theme was “Human Rights and a World without Violence”.
We celebrate Mr Hume a servant leader, whose words of wisdom, and contribution to world peace will forever remain with us.
In his words: “Peace to me is a world where people of all races and creeds can live together in harmony with all having the right to a house and work…”
